Denial of “pre-existing conditions” no longer a threat to Arkansas children

This week child advocates celebrate the two year anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act. When the health reform law takes full effect in 2014, Americans can no longer be denied coverage based on so-called “pre-existing conditions,” prior health problems that insurers use to disqualify many from care.

What a lot of people don’t realize, though, is that children already cannot be denied, again thanks to health reform. This is great news for the up to 17 million children thought to have an issue that could be construed as a pre-existing condition – and their families. Before this protection, the families of children with pre-existing conditions lived in fear of bankruptcy, unable to find a reasonable health plan that would allow their child to get even basic care.

We’ll be posting all week on how the health reform law is helping more children access quality, affordable care. Join us! Share this message or add your own reasons why you want to wish a happy birthday to the law protecting the health of children and families.
