Democracy & Voting Rights

Democracy on Behalf of Children

AACF believes families should have a say in important decisions impacting their lives. The protection and expansion of voting rights is critical to that goal. Over the past couple decades, Arkansas has been going in the wrong direction, however, in ensuring that Arkansans can easily exercise their right to vote.

Protecting Voters’ Rights

There is no more fundamental aspect of our democracy than the right to vote. States are tasked with creating and implementing election laws and should ensure that there are not barriers to legally eligible citizens voting. This can be done while still preserving election integrity. It also must be done to prevent apathy and maintain trust in democratic systems.

The Importance of Advocacy

Arkansas has one of the lowest rates of voter participation in the country. But we can reverse that trend with changes to the law. Over the past two decades, several rounds of laws have passed that have made it harder to vote and harder to propose ballot measures. Laws like voter ID laws, restrictions on vote by mail, lack of online voter registration, and allowing the General Assembly to overturn citizen-led initiatives, creates a sense of apathy among potential voters. Arkansas can reverse course, though, and ensure that laws encourage, not discourage, participation in democracy.
