Countdown to Cuts

On July 4, President Donald Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act into law. This legislation will worsen hunger and strip health care coverage from millions of families — to partially offset trillions in tax cuts. With this Countdown to Cuts campaign, Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families aims to raise awareness about what’s taking place at the federal and state levels, when to expect major changes to go into effect, how to advocate for better policies, and to share important resources for individuals and families.

What’s Happening

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act increases costs for low-income Arkansans by taking away health care coverage and the SNAP benefits they use to buy food for their kids. It is an attempt to undermine the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid, which have saved countless lives by expanding health care coverage and making it less expensive.

In addition, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act failed to extend the premium tax credits enhancements that makes health care coverage through the Marketplace affordable for many families. This fight over the premium tax credits enhancements is one reason why Congress has not passed a FY26 budget or even a short-term continuing resolution, resulting in the current federal government shutdown. If Congress doesn’t act soon, hungry families may not receive their full SNAP benefits in November, 130,000 Arkansans may be priced out of health insurance, and many other programs that rely on Congress to approve budget appropriations — like Head Start, WIC, and Part C early intervention services — could be severely impacted.
